A new 18 year study of more than 6,000 people found that people ages 50 to 65 who ate a diet rich in animal proteins (20% of diet) during middle age were more than FOUR TIMES as likely to die of cancer than those who ate a low-protein diet (less than 10% of diet).
The study also found that middle-age people who ate foods rich in animal proteins — including meat, milk and cheese — were 75 percent more likely to die of any cause (like heart disease) than those who ate a low animal protein diet within the study period.
Plant-based proteins did not increase cancer risk because they don't raise insulin growth factor hormone IGF-1 like animal protein.
Another interesting finding, this risk factor gets lower with age. People older than 65 were less likely to die of cancer or other causes related to their protein consumption.
The study suggests that the Mediterranean Diet, which is low in animal protein and high in carbohydrates, may be best for extending life span. YES YES YES!
Here's the takeaway: If you eat meat, it should be a very small part of your diet, less than 10%. For me it's about 3%.
And of course it should be humanely pasture-raised and organic or wild
